由香港經日本、檀香山,獨自飛往美國三藩市佛教講堂。
The Venerable Master traveled alone from Hong Kong by way of
Japan and Hawaii to the San Francisco Buddhist Lecture Hall.

半隱遁時期,自稱「墓中僧」。開講《金剛經》、《六祖壇經》等。
During this period of semi-seclusion, the Venerable Master
called himself
"a monk in a grave." Nonetheless, he lectured on the Vajra Sutra,
the Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra, and others.

1968
|
|
六月,為西方大學生,開辦「暑期楞嚴講修班」。
Beginning in June, the Venerable Master hosted
the Shurangama Summer Lecture and Cultivation Session,
which was attended by a group of American college students.

十一月,開講《法華經》。
Beginning in November, the Venerable Master began
a lecture series on the entire Dharma Flower Sutra.

1969

|
有五位美國人在上人座下出家,後於臺灣基隆海會寺受具足戒,
創美國佛教史始有僧相之紀錄。
Five American monastic disciples went to Jilung, Taiwan to receive full
ordaination at Haihui Monastery. These five Americans formed the
initial Sangha led by the Venerable Master. For the first time in the
history of Buddhism in America, a Sangha of Americans existed.
