City of Ten Thousand Buddhas
The Master with Karmapa at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas

The Karmapa’s disciples tried to reach the Master several times by phone at Gold Mountain Dhyana Monastery, but the Master would not take the calls. Finally disciples were sent to see the Master in person. The Master also declined to see them. Eventually the disciples of the Karmapa left messages making it clear that the Karmapa’s life was in grave danger due to his illness (cancer). The Master was informed of the situation and after that the Karmapa’s illness went into recession.

Later, the Karmapa himself went to visit the Master, who was at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

Wherever the Karmapa went, his disciples arranged an elaborate fanfare. This occasion was no exception. And so one carload of his disciples started out about one hour early so that they could reach the City first and arrange for flags, Tibetan trumpets, and so forth. Who would have guessed that their car would break down! It took them more than one hour to get back on the road, and they were terribly nervous because they knew they could never reach the City before the Karmapa did.

Thus, the Karmapa’s entry into the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas was quiet and unheralded. Everyone was at lunch, including the Master. The Karmapa and his personal attendants had to come to the dining hall to find the Master, who calmly invited them to take a seat on the side until he finished his lunch.

Later, the Master walked with the Karmapa to the Master’s quarters. Upon arrival in the Master’s guest room, the Karmapa’s disciples began to pull out beautiful cloths to cover his seat and to arrange other adornments. the Karmapa stopped them saying, "No! Not here! Put it away." Then the Karmapa took a simple seat at the side of the Master. A quiet discussion followed in which the Master urged the Karmapa to immediately cancel his commitments and shave his head to become a Bhikshu: to properly enter monastic life. The Master’s unspoken meaning was that if the Karmapa could put down his prestige and reputation, he could get well and enjoy long life. But if he continued to do the "Anointing of Crowns" ceremony, he would expend too much of his own precious energy, and there could be no guarantee on his own life. The Karmapa was unable to heed the Master’s advice and died not long after that interview.
