Professor Edward Conze, the noted Buddhist scholar, was teaching at the University of Washington, Seattle, when Dr. Ronald Epstein wrote his Master¡¦s thesis based on his translation of the Venerable Master¡¦s Verses Without a Stand and Prose Commentary on the Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra. At that time Bhikshu Heng Ching had also been studying with Professor Conze, but after the Shurangama Sutra Summer Session, he made his decision to enter into monastic life under the Master.

Professor Lewis Lancaster, the Director of the Buddhist Studies Department of the University of California at Berkeley, was also on Dr. Epstein¡¦s committee when he wrote his Doctoral dissertation based on his translation of the text and the Venerable Master¡¦s commentary on the ¡§Seeking for the Mind in Seven Places¡¨section of the Shurangama Sutra. Current with this photo, Bhikshuni Heng Yin was doing research under the direction of Professor Lewis Lancaster regarding the translation of the Sixth Patriarch¡¦s Sutra with the Venerable Master¡¦s commentary. This occasion was auspicious, as evidenced in the unusual triple appearance of an octagonal light canopy over the group.
