或說偈曰:  
三句六句無一句 召眾趁眾夏喚之
什麼什麼破妄執 善哉善哉返本來
何不早說時未至 機緣成熟暢所懷
古今祖師真多事 弗辭勞苦與麻煩

註解:  
我有沒有念錯啊?〈答:沒有。〉沒有念錯啊?以前我常常在聖人門前賣百姓,今天又是班門弄斧。我們這兒都是聖人,我在聖人面前常常賣百姓;今天你這個魯班來了,我這班門弄斧,不知道把誰砍壞了。  

「三句六句無一句」:他說三句省去,這也可以說叫你自己去研究,自己來體會:這是一種說法。說三句外省去,這省去又可以說是都沒有了,都把它擦去了。六句內會取,這六句內自己去體會。這就是,「說法者無法可說,是名說法。」所以他說,說什麼法?沒有什麼可說的。那麼這個藥山還沒有真正地承認這個百丈禪師,所以又問,「他還又說什麼?」雲巖禪師就說,有的時候百丈上堂,把大家都召集在一起了,他又拿這個杖,就這麼一晃,「去了!去了! 」大家就都走了,聽招呼嘛!走了,他又叫大家,「回來!回來! 」那麼大家又回來了,聽招呼嘛;聽招呼,你說這是什麼 ?把大家叫來,又叫大家走;走了又叫回來。這是什麼?什麼也沒有。

這麼樣子藥山一聽,「喔!這個瘋子說的法,是不錯的。對了!是這樣子。」所以他說 ,「如是如是,哎!你怎麼不早一點說呢?你早說嘛! 」就把雲巖禪師鬧了一頓;鬧了一頓完了就說,「因為今天你說了我才認識這個〈百丈〉懷海,我們這個法兄弟,他真是得道 了,真是瘋子了!」

你明白那是什麼,真是瘋子?真是瘋子的人是沒有執著了;你要沒有執著了,那就什麼也沒有了。你看金山活佛,今天我聽我們這個老同參說的,說他常常吃波羅蜜;你要是見著 ,一定給你吃的。

這波羅蜜什麼樣子呢?我告訴你,這是他這個黏痰吐沫,和這個聚沫子,和這個垃圾,這麼一起和一和,這就是波羅蜜。你誰要拜他做師父嘛,先要吃一點波羅蜜;他這個口裡吐出那個黏痰吐沫啊,鼻涕眼淚啊,這樣和一和 ,弄一點波羅蜜給人吃。這是在武漢的,你把那個給他們大家講一下,那個是很好的!這是金山活佛,這是我們那邊掛著的相片,那個金山活佛。

智參:師父叫我講,這個金山寺以前有個活佛,叫做妙善,就是微妙的「妙」,行善的「善」。這個人,在金山寺的時候來講,二十來歲出家,曾經有一度從鎮江到武漢,在武漢住了有好幾年。武漢很多的佛教徒、居士、信徒,都要皈依他,他不收;大家對他非常尊敬 ,實際上他也是很不錯的,了不起的一個〈錄音帶不明〉,可是他外表的形相,就像過去的濟公一樣,衣裳穿得破破爛爛,鞋子嘛也不像樣,一年四季就只有身上一件衣服。

那麼武漢有些大居士,也是有錢的,就十幾個人要拜他做師父,想個辦法,想什麼辦法呢?請他吃飯,到哪裡吃飯呢?武漢有個素菜館,叫菜根香......〈錄音帶不明〉,三層樓,就在二樓上包了個大的......〈錄音帶不明〉,兩張桌子併起來,叫了兩桌菜,放在一起,屏障拖下來,就把師父,就是妙善,坐在中間,把門一鎖,外頭不得進,裡面不得出。吃到一 半,大家就跪下來求,「我們有一個要求,我們要師父收做徒弟,不收不行,一定要收。」因為在以前有人要拜他做師父,他不收,怎麼樣也不收。「今天你不收也不行,不收也跑不掉,我們不起來,大家跪在地下。」

他看看這些人,叫他們起來也不肯起來,他也沒得辦法,就想了一個辦法。他說,「跟我做徒弟有一個條件」:這些人都是有錢的,以為他要錢,就說,「行行行!什麼條件都行 。」他說,「我只有一個條件,沒得第二個。」「好的,我們一定履行。」

他就站起來,把他這些吐沫子黏痰,在手上搓,在地上那麼一和;當然,地上不是那麼髒,但是他那個形象做得很難看。他那麼一和,就吃下去了,就講了,「你們看見我吃了吧?這就是波羅蜜,比你們這一桌菜還好吃!你們要做我徒弟,你們把嘴張開;張開還不算, 我要把這波羅蜜一口口吐在你嘴裡。」他還不是拿手那麼捏,拿筷子夾進去,他拿自己的嘴,靠在你的嘴吐進去;吐進去之後,你嘴還不准抿,他還要檢查,看你嚥下去沒。他說,「眼睛還不能閉,眼睛還要望著我。」

這個事情難了,這麼十多個人跪在這塊,有的已經自動地爬起來了。只有一個人,姓夏,是浙江省慈谿人,在武漢做生意,就張著眼睛一直望著師父。師父把自己的嘴,湊到他的嘴;他把這口痰吞下去了。吞下去了之後,師父還叫他,「把嘴張開,給我檢查。」他要看是不是藏在舌頭底下。檢查了,沒得,就告訴他了,「啊!你是我的徒弟。」還有幾個到了嘴裡吃不下去,吐出來,所以他在武漢就收了這麼一個徒弟,姓夏。從此以後,大家稱他「夏菩薩,夏菩薩」一活佛的徒弟就是菩薩了!

Another verse says:  
Three sentences, six sentences, not a single sentence:
He summoned, dismissed, and summoned the assembly again.
What is it? What is it? Break false attachments.
Good indeed! Good indeed! You're returned to the origin.
Why didn't you speak earlier? The time wasn't right.
When conditions ripened, he held nothing back.
Patriarchs past and present are truly busy,
Never shirking toil, suffering, or trouble.

Commentary:
Did I recite anything wrong? [Answer: No.] I didn't make any mistakes? In the past, I often "recited The Hundred Surnames [a children's text] at the door of sages," and now, I'm still "wielding an ax at the door of Lu Ban [a master carpenter]." [This phrase means to show off in front of experts]. All the people here are sages, so I'm always reciting The Hundred Surnames to them; today, Lu Ban has arrived, and so I'm showing off my ax before him, and I might chop someone up accidentally.

Three sentences, six sentences, not a single sentence. Master Bai-zhang had said, "Having heard three sentences, you must go and reflect." One explanation is that he was telling you to go and try to understand it. Another way to explain is that "Go and reflect" means being empty; sweeping everything away. "Within six sentences, you must seek insight"; you must understand it on your own. In other words, "The speaker of Dharma has no Dharma to speak; that is what is meant by speaking Dharma." So he spoke, but "What Dharma did he speak? There was nothing to say. He didn't say any-thing at all. Master Yao-shan had not truly recognized Dhyana Master Bai-zhang at that point, so he kept asking, "What else did he say? Did he say anything else?" Dhyana Master Yun-yan replied, "Sometimes Master Bai-zhang would ascend to his seat and beckon everyone to gather. Then he would take his cane and wave it, as if to say, "Go away! Leave!" After all the people had gone, following his instructions, he summoned them again, "Come back! Come back!" They all returned upon being called back What would you say was going on? He called everyone over, then dismissed them, then called them back. What was the point? There was no point at all.  

When Master Yao-shan heard that, he thought, "Ah! That crazy guy's Dharma is not bad! He's right on!" So he said, "So it is, so it is! Why didn't you tell me earlier? You should have said that from the start." He scolded Master Yun-yan roundly, and then said, "Because of what you said today, I now recognize my brother, (Bai-zhang) Huai-hai. He has truly attained the Way. He's a real lunatic."  

Do you understand that? A real lunatic has no attachments. If you have no attachments, you have nothing at all. Look at the Living Buddha of Gold Mountain. Today we heard my old fellow cultivator tell about how he often ate paramita. If you saw the Living Buddha, he would certainly give you some to eat. What is the paramita like? It was made of his phlegm and spit, and some trash, all mixed together. That's what he called paramita. If you wanted to bow to him as your teacher, you'd have to first eat some paramita. He would cough up some phlegm, spit some saliva, and get some snot and eye mucus, and mix it up to make paramita, which he then served to people. This was in Wuhan. Why don't you tell everyone about it? There are some great stories about the Living Buddha of Gold Mountain, whose picture is hanging on our wall.

Upasaka Zhi-can: The Master wants me to speak. There used to be a Living Buddha at Gold Mountain. His name was Miao-shan, meaning "wonderful and good." He left the home life at Gold Mountain in his early twenties. He went from Zhenjiang to Wuhan, where he lived for quite a few years. Many Buddhists and laypeople in Wuhan wanted to take refuge with him, but he would not accept disciples. Everyone held him in the highest esteem, and in actuality he was quite remarkable. In terms of appearance, however, he wore disheveled clothes and tattered shoes, just like Venerable Ji, who wore the same set of clothes all year round.

There were a dozen or so important and wealthy laypeople in Wuhan who wished to bow to the Living Buddha as their teacher, so they tried to find a way to do so. What method did they use? They invited him for a meal. Where did they go? There was a vegetarian restaurant in Wuhan called Cai Gen Xiang (Aromatic Vegetable Roots) in a three-story building. They reserved two adjoining tables on the second floor and ordered food for both tables. They took down the ornamental screen and seated Venerable Miao-shan in the middle. Then they locked the door so no one could go in or out. Halfway through the meal, everyone got on his knees and pleaded, "We have a request. We ask that the Teacher accept disciples. You must accept us."

In the past, people had tried to bow to him as their teacher, but he had adamantly refused to accept disciples. And so that day, the laypeople said, "Today you cannot refuse to accept us. You cannot leave this place, and we shall kneel here and not get up." He took a look at them. They refused to get up, and there was nothing he could do. Then he thought of a way. He said, "There is one condition for those who want to be my disciples." Being wealthy, these people immediately said, "Sure, sure, we can meet any condition." The Living Buddha said, "I just have one condition, and no more." "Fine, we will certainly do as you say," they promised.

The Living Buddha stood up and spat some phlegm and saliva onto his hands, which he rubbed, and then rolled the mixture into a ball on the floor. Of course the floor was not that dirty, but it wasn't a pretty sight. He rolled it into a ball and ate it, and then said, "You saw me eat it, right. This is paramita. It tastes better than all the food on the table. If you want to be my disciples, you have to open your mouth. And that's not all; I'm going to spit a mouthful of paramita into your mouth." He didn't pick up the mixture from the floor with his hands or with a pair of chopsticks. He put his own mouth next to yours and spat into yours, and then you still couldn't close your mouth, because he had to check to make sure you swallowed it. He said, "You can't close your eyes. You have to keep looking at me."

That was a real challenge. Some of the dozen or so people who had been kneeling voluntarily got up. Only one man named Xia, who was originally from Ci-xi in Zhe-jiang Province and was doing business in Wuhan, kept his eyes wide open and gazed at his Teacher. His Teacher put his mouth next to this man's and spat, and the man swallowed. Then his Teacher said, "Open your mouth and let me check" He wanted to see if the man had hidden the ball of spit under his tongue, but no, he hadn't. Then he told the man, "Ah! You are now my disciple." There were a few others who were unable to swallow the ball of spit once it was in their mouths, and spat it out again. So, in Wuhan, the Living Buddha accepted only one disciple named Xia, whom everyone later called Bodhisattva Xia. The disciple of the Living Buddha must be a Bodhisattva!
