……這幾個要出家的,最低限度也在這兒都做工超過一年以上的,甚至於兩年、三年都有了,所以才能夠資格出家;新來的就想要出家,這是不可以的。出家不是很容易的,出家要規規矩矩,老老實實的;要其他人應該做的事情,出家人不可以做,其他人所好的,出家人不可以歡喜。好像跳舞、飲酒、看電影看戲,這都是出家人不應該做的;你若做,那就是犯戒。犯戒就是毀戒的比丘了。

我今天清清楚楚告訴你們想要出家的人,如果覺得守不了戒,現在還可以 cancel 你的 appointment (取消約定),還可以不出家。我們這兒出家是最方便,最自由最民主的,不勉強。所以你們誰要是說:「我覺得受不了」,可以趕快退出,可不能勉 強出家。

像吳宗嶽的媽媽,她兒子不許可她出家,她也不可以勉強的。妳在這兒好好地用功修行,出家在家都一樣的;妳那麼大年紀了,不一定要勉強出家。因為妳年紀這麼大了,落髮不落髮都一樣修行了。妳心裏若出家了,誰也不能不叫妳出家;妳心裏不出家,就把頭剃去,那不是一定真在那個表面上。若心頭不打妄語,不飲酒,不偷盜,不殺生,持戒,那就是出家,所以不要勉強。講到這兒,有出家人就說:「哦!出家和不出家是一樣的,那我趕快還俗囉!」Okay(可以)!

還有這個果童,他也要出家!你現在不可以出家的。第一,你那麼歡喜笑,出家的人笑,不可以那麼嘰嘰嘎嘎地笑,不可以笑出聲來;你笑出聲來,那就是還不夠資格呢!有人說:「笑不可以,大約發脾氣可以吧?」那更不行。你還不能蹦蹦跳跳的;你儘蹦蹦跳跳的,那也是不夠資格的, too much movement (太好動),晃晃盪盪的,這是不行的。

哪有一個出家人,在那個地方這麼樣子。你看看!這像什麼!這是不可以的。所以坐如鐘,立如松:行住坐臥,都不是隨隨便便的,這才可以。你以為出家就那麼容易的?不是說我吃了齋了,就可以出家,或者怎麼樣子就可以了。這是要經過考試 的,考試要合格才可以;不合格,就是哪一個人到這兒來,說「我要出家」,我都不許可的。

以前有一個要出家的,經過半年的時間,我一句話沒和他講過。為什麼呢?我就要看看他有沒有忍耐心。就這樣考察,還都不一定靠得住呢!不一定成就的,況且要是不考驗,那更是不行的。

這個果童想要出家,你要出家,先要練習跏趺坐;你什麼時候能一坐,坐兩個鐘頭入定,也不動了,也不晃了,也不起身跑來跑去了,這兩個鐘頭坐得如如不動,了了常明,那時候可以出家了。你沒有把自己訓練好了,那出家做一個蹦蹦跳跳的沙彌,蹦蹦跳跳的比丘,那怎麼可以呢?所以要先修這個不動--先要心不動,然後要身不動,性也不動,裏邊外邊都不動了,這才可以出家呢!

...There will be people leaving the home-life on Thursday. They have been working here for at least one year, some of them for over two or three years. That is why they are qualified. Newcomers are not allowed to leave the home-life, because it is not easy. One must follow the rules, be honest and not do what other people like to do. For instance, dancing, drinking, seeing movies, etc. are all prohibited to left-home people. If you do these things you will be a Bhikshu or Bikshuni who does not keep precepts.

Let me make it clear to those of you who want to leave home. If you don't feel that you can keep the precepts, you can cancel your appointment. Our place is the most convenient, free and democratic. No one is forced to do it. So if you feel that you cannot stand it, you can withdraw. It is all right.

Wu Zong-Yue did not permit her mother to leave the home life. You (mother) shouldn't force it. If you can cultivate diligently then it does not make any difference whether you leave home or not. You are at such an advanced age it makes no difference to your cultivation. If you have left the home-life in your heart, no one can pull you back; if you have not left the home-life, even if you shave your head, it is rather superficial. If you don't tell lies in your mind, don't drink, don't steal, don't take lives, and you uphold precepts, just that is leaving the home-life. So don't force it. Now someone might say, "Oh! Since leaving the home-life and not leaving the home-life are the same, I should hurry up and return to lay life." Okay!

There is Guotong who wants to leave the home-life. You cannot do that now because you like to laugh too much. Left-home people cannot giggle and laugh loudly the way you do. If you laugh out loud you are not qualified. Some people say, "Well, since laughing is not permitted, maybe it is all right to lose one's temper!? That is even worse. And you cannot jump around or sway your body. You are not permitted to move around too much. Who does that? Take a look. How does that look? That is not permissible. One should sit like a bell; stand like a pine; in movement and stillness, during the day and night one must not be casual. And it is not the case that being a vegetarian qualifies you to leave the home-life. It takes some testing, and only if you pass can you be considered. If you fail the tests, I will not permit you to leave the home-life no matter who you are.

Someone requested to leave the home-life once, and I did not speak to him for half a year. Why? I wanted to see if he could be patient. There was no guarantee that I wouldn't make a mistake even with this test. How much the more if I did not give tests.

Guotong wants to leave home. You have to practice sitting in full lotus posture. When you can sit for two hours without moving, without swaying, without getting up and running around...if you can sit for two hours ‘thus, thus unmoving, and clear and constantly bright,’ then you will be qualified to leave home. If you don't train yourself, you will be a hyperactive Shramanera. How can that be okay? So one must cultivate an ‘unmoving’ state of being. First your mind has to be unmoving, then your body, and finally your nature has to be unmoving. When you are unmoving both inside and out, then you are ready to leave the home-life.
