你們皈依三寶的人，以後或者到其他的道場裡，或者到其他的廟上去住的時候，不要以為不給錢是一種好處。因為你是在家人，到無論哪一個道場，屬於佛教的，都應該發一種供養心，要供養三寶，不要叫三寶來供養你。因為你要是叫三寶來供養你，那你就一生不如一生了。
為什麼他就富貴？就因為他供養三寶，才能有福。為什麼那一些人窮？就因為他不供養三寶，所以他一生比一生窮。你們是凡皈依我的皈依弟子，無論以後到任何的道場去，都應該生一種供養心。
…… 在中國講究護身佛，戴一個佛像在身邊就逢凶化吉，遇難成祥。你戴著佛像，佛會保護著你，無論哪一位都是。但是你請佛像，必須要出一點功德來發供養心。所以我叫你們，誰請佛像無論錢多少，應該拿出一點來供養三寶。不要說有這佛像，就沒有這個佛像也應該供養三寶的。所以以後你們在道場裡頭，或者請佛經，或者請書，或者請佛像，無論請什麼都應該發一種供養心。不要以為你沒有出錢，這就得到好處了，這是得不到好處的！你沒有供養心，你也沒有功德，所以要發供養心。

Those of you who have taken refuge with the Triple Jewel should know that whenever you live at a Way-place or a temple, you should not think you can get a good deal by not making a donation. Since you are a layperson, you ought to want to make offerings to the Triple Jewel no matter which Way-place you go to. You should make offerings to the Triple Jewel instead of letting the Triple Jewel support you. If you ask the Triple Jewel to make offerings to you, your lot will be more and more miserable in each successive life.
Why are some people noble and wealthy? They gained blessings from having made offerings to the Triple Jewel. Why are other people poor? They didn't make offerings to the Triple Jewel, and so they become poorer in life after life. People who have taken refuge with me should wish to make offerings to the Triple Jewel, no matter what Way-place you visit in the future.
... Chinese people like to wear small Buddha images for good luck and protection. Regardless of who you are, when you wear a Buddha image, the Buddha will protect you. However, you should donate some money and make an offering when you request a Buddha image. I'm trying to teach you that no matter how rich or poor you are, you should at least donate a little when you acquire a Buddha image. In fact, you ought to make offerings to the Triple Jewel even if there are no Buddha images. From now on, when you request Sutras, Buddhist books, Buddha images and other Buddhist items from a Way-place, you should make an offering. Do not think you are getting a bargain by not donating; you won't gain anything if you entertain that idea! You will not have merit and virtue if you don't make offerings. Thus, you should resolve to do so.
