Tina Yang, a graduate of Developing Virtue Girls Secondary School, graduated with honors from Mendocino Community College on the evening of Friday, May 25. She was selected to be the commencement speaker that night and to represent the 244 students that graduated. Tina is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Talking about the great Chinese educator, Confucius, and his vision of a perfect world, Tina told the graduates, college faculty and guests she hoped they would do two things that Confucius suggested:
1. That people would "see everyone as part of their families," seeing "everyone's children as their own;" and
2. That people would "contribute their strength to society for the public good... without thought of personal gain."
Tina spoke during her speech about the people she has met who exemplified these two principles. She thanked the teachers who helped her apply to college. She said she will take along with her the things she has learned as she attended school and college here. This fall Tina will be entering the University of California at Los Angeles' prestigious film school, which only allows 15 students into its program.
Sixteen years ago, Tina came to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas with her mother and grandmother, and attended Instilling Goodness Elementary and Developing Virtue Secondary Girls' Schools. She was just 5 years old then. Her mother and grandmother later became nuns.
Tina's graduation was attended by her mother, Heng Nai Shi, her grandmother, Heng Yue Shi, also the principal and vice principal of the Girls School, Heng Yin Shi and Heng Jen Shi, the women's coordinator at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, Heng Liang Shi, and professor of Dharma Realm Buddhist University, Heng Hsien Shi.
