須臾而老病相尋。迅速而無常又至。風火交煎。神識於中潰亂。精血既竭。皮肉自外乾枯。

「須臾而老病相尋」:須臾就是很短暫的時間;人這一生不過這一轉眼的時間。而老,又老了;老了就是雞皮鶴髮了,那時候再漂亮的女孩子也沒人要了。你說他太太再嫁人,你一看她老了,唉!不要了;甚至於結婚那個丈夫年輕一點,看這個太太老了,也要找一個新鮮的,一個年輕的女孩子。你信不信?信罷!咳!就是這樣子;這個世界就是這樣子,所以看透了,就應該早一點放下了,不要那麼迷了。「迅速而無常又至」:很快的就死了。迅速就是快的意思,像電光石火似的。

「風火交煎」:這個風一吹,這個火也就燒得旺了,所以風火在這四大裏邊它作怪:四大不調了。風若大了,就生火了;火大了,把你這人就渾身燒得幾百度、幾千度,就燒乾了。「神識於中潰亂」:那時候也就失去正當的知覺了,沒有理智了,什麼也都不懂了。

「精血既竭」:人這個精氣神,精盡則亡,所以這講結婚男女這個事情,那就是找死呢,往死路上走。因為他怕活的年紀大了,所以要快點死;快點死,所以女孩子就要找個男朋友,說,「你趕快叫我死囉!我不願意活著了。」那個男孩子嘛,覺得自己怎麼樣死呢?哎!找一個女孩子囉!「妳快把我弄死算了。」就在那兒男貪女愛的不要命了。人這個精氣神,精沒有了一定死的;氣斷了那當然不能活著的了;那神若沒有了,也就是沒有知覺了。我們人有知覺,是什麼?就是那個神有知覺。我們這活著也因為有氣,有精。人這個精,是你一天吃的東西吃了很多很多,變成很少很少的精。所以你這麼旦旦而伐,一天到晚不要命,男的以為有女人,這就是好事情,說是快樂;簡直地,這是真正的一個顛倒!

有人說,「師父,你不能這麼講;你這麼講,世界不是沒有人了嗎?」你沒有法子叫世界人人都明白這個道理。你再耳提面命告訴他,這個不好不好,他還不相信,他還要往這個不好路上跑。你說,「喔!往那兒跑是死路一條!」他說,「我先試試怎麼樣死。」你看,就是這麼顛倒!所以你不容易喚醒他。你切記不要擔心說是,「啊!那若都不結婚,世界人類沒有了。」你不結,他結;他不結,他可結呢!你沒有法子個個告訴他說,「喂!不要結婚哪,結婚要死的啊!」他就說,「要死?我沒有死過,我要試一試呀!我先死一趟給你看看。」你看!這個沒有辦法的,所以你不要擔心。

就好像那個于果空,來了到這兒,說,「假如人人都出家了,這個世界還成一個社會嗎?」我說:「你可以叫他都還俗啊!」他說:「我沒有辦法叫他們都還俗。」我說,「那你又有什麼辦法叫他都出家?」「那可是我這麼想。」「你那麼想是個妄想嘛!」老實了;帶了幾千個問題想要問我,這一下子都給憋回去了,這一些個問題都給憋死了。

所以各位!我今天和你們說的,這是破釜沉舟,背城一戰,你們再若不明白,還是放不下、看不破,那釋迦牟尼佛也沒有辦法,也救不了你的。說,「那天主不高興那樣子啊?」天主?天主他都沒明白呢!他若反對我,他也是個糊塗天主;他要不是糊塗天主,絕對不會反對我。所以這個精血既竭,你好像這個某某人,還一樣出去「走私漏稅」,這怎麼可以呢?

「皮肉自外乾枯」:他精氣神沒有了,皮肉都會乾了,從外邊一層一層都乾了,化為地水火風了;地大就歸於地,水大就歸於水,風大歸於風,火大歸於火了:四大分張了。

Essay:
In an instant, old age and illness overtake us; suddenly impermancnce arrives. Amid the blaze of wind and fire, our spirit becomes disordered; our essence and blood are exhausted. Our flesh and skin wither and dry up. We feel as if iron needles are piercing our every pore and as if knives are hacking our every orifice. The spirit departing from the body at death feels more pain than does a live turtle when its shell is ripped off before it goes into the pot.

Commentary:
In an instant old age and illness overtake us.
We are born, and in the twinkling of an eye, we become old. When old age arrives, our skin gets wrinkled and our hair turns gray. At this time, no matter how pretty the woman is, no one will want her. If the woman tries to find another marriage partner, no one is interested. If the husband is a little younger and sees that his wife has become old, he will look for another young girl. Do you believe it or not? The world is like this. Quickly put down everything, otherwise, suddenly impermanence arrives. We are confused and muddled, and suddenly before we know it, old age arrives, and illness overtakes us. The ghost of impermanence arrives like a flash of lightning.

Amid the blaze of wind and fire: When the wind blows, the fire starts to burn intensely; it can burn to several hundreds or thousands of degrees, until it is dried up. This is because the four elements are not in harmony. Our spirit becomes disordered: our spirit becomes muddled and no longer knows anything. We don't know where we came from or where we are going to. Our essence and blood are exhausted: They dry up and disappear. As for marriage and the relationship between a man and a woman, it actually sends people along the road to death. They are afraid of getting old, so girls will look for boyfriends and say, "Come quickly and let me die. I don't want to live anymore!" Boys will look for girls and say, "Hurry and let me die!" They are mutually throwing their lives away. Men and women who love one another basically don't want to live. When their essence, breath, and spirit are exhausted, they will die. We are conscious because we have spirit, essence, and breath. It takes huge quantities of the food that we consume to produce a tiny bit of vital essence. How can we afford to expend our essence all day long? Men are truly confused to think that having a woman is a desirable and happy thing.

Someone says, "Shifu, you can't say that, because if what you say is true, then wouldn't there be no people in the world?" There is no way to make everyone understand this principle. No matter how skillfully you try to tell them this is no good, they won't be­lieve you and will still carry on. If you say, "You will die if you take that road!" they will say, "Oh? Well, I'd like to try and find out how to die." You don't have to worry; they are confused and it is not easy to warn them. Don't fret: "Ah! If no one gets married, the human race will become extinct." If you don't get married, others will still get married. There is no way you can tell everyone, "Hey, don't get married, otherwise you will die." They will say, "I have never died before; I'd like to try it out." So you don't have to worry as there is no way you can get everyone not to marry.

For example, Yu Guo Kong came here and said, "If everyone left the home-life, what would this world be like?" I said, "You could ask everyone to return to lay life." He said, "I have no way to get everyone to return to lay life." I said, "Then what way do you have to get them all to leave the home-life?" "It was just a thought," he replied. "That is just false thinking," I told him. To tell the truth, he had come with tens of thousands of questions, but his questions were quelled in an instant.

After hearing what I have told you today, you must fight against your greed and desire with determination, and not retreat. If you still don't understand and cannot let go of them, then, even Shakyamuni Buddha has no way to save you. "But God will not be happy," you object. If God doesn't understand and goes against it, then he is a confused god. If God is not confused, he certainly will not oppose me. So if the essence and blood are exhausted, then it is like Mr. So and So who engaged in "smuggling and tax evasion."

Flesh and skin wither and dry: The essence, energy, and spirit are depleted, and even the flesh and skin are also dried up. They all dry up layer by layer, and the four elements disperse. Earth, water, fire, and wind each return to their original source.
