In the new Way-place (monastery) in
Australia there's a beautiful Guanyin image outside, life
size and cast in metal, similar in style to the ones we have
in the back of the Buddha Hall. She's standing in the middle
of a pool of very pure water. There's a flagstone path
surrounding the pool where you can walk and recite her name.
Water flows out from her sweet dew vase into the pool, and
five colored lights shine on her at night. It's a very
beautiful sight.
There are many, many different kinds of birds there, sort of
like the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Heng Gwei Shi and I were
standing in the lecture hall looking outside and there's a
bird feeder out there where we saw all of the birds coming
for their dinner. There were wild parrots with variegated
plumage of red, green, blue, and yellow. There were
cockatoos, which are large white birds with curved beaks and
a feathered crest. There were also birds that were solid
red, beautifully bright red in color, and many other kinds
of birds.
Then we noticed a very strange looking bird in the tree
outside. His head was about the same size as his body, and
he looked very heavy. Suddenly we heard this crash through
the leaves and the branches, and then this thump on the
ground! The bird had fallen out of the tree. In his mouth
was a long worm. It was eating the worm. We started telling
him that he shouldn't be eating meat, and that there was
very fine vegetarian food over there and he could go have
some. But he was so much into the state of eating this worm,
that although we were scolding him and telling him that he
shouldn't be doing this, he continued to eat the worm. Then
another bird went over and stood in front of him, and just
looked at him as if to say, "Can't you hear what they're
telling you?" But then he ate the worm. It went down his
throat, and his whole body quivered and shook! Then he just
sat there. We said to him, "Well, you're really shameless!
You're really hopeless! There's no sense in talking to you!"
We went back into the lecture hall. We were there for a few
minutes, and as we were about to leave we noticed that the
bird who had eaten the worm was sitting right by the door,
waiting for us. So we walked out. He looked at us and we
said, "You're really hopeless! You're not the least bit
ashamed. You ate that worm right in front of left-home
people!"
He turned his ear up, and listened! Then Heng Gwei Shi and I
took turns talking to him, and he would turn his ear and
listen to whoever was talking to him! Then we gave him the
Three Refuges and left. And even when we left he just sat
there and looked at us as we walked away. So maybe when
people go to Australia there will be more than people who
will be willing to listen to the Dharma there.
