Qin Yi Shi became a new Shramanerika (novice nun) this year on Guanyin Bodhisattva's Leaving Home Day. She grew up in a Buddhist family in Tainan, Taiwan. When the Venerable Master went to Taman in 1989, Qin Yi Shi and her family all took refuge. She received the Dharma name Guo Zhi. In fifth grade, she visited Blessings and Wisdom Monastery in Kaohsiung and liked it so much she stayed there. A few days later she enrolled in the Buddhist Academy at Wonderful Dharma Monastery. After she had studied for several months, her family called her home. From then on, holidays were the only time she could attend Dharma assemblies and volunteer at Blessings and Wisdom Temple and Dharma Realm Sagely Monastery in Liugui.
When the Venerable Master returned to Taiwan in 1993 to propagate Dharma, all four people in her family took the five precepts. Upon completing seventh grade, she accompanied her mother to attend the Venerable Master's Cremation Ceremony in the U.S. and then stayed on to attend Developing Virtue Girls High School. A year later she again wished to leave the home-life and thus moved to the City of the Dharma Realm for half a year. Eventually she returned to high school at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. During the winter break of 1996, her mother brought her younger brother to study at the City as well, and her mother became a volunteer teacher, which she still is to this day.
She applied to leave home again in 1998 and was permitted to do so this year. Now she is attending high school with the other novices at Long Beach Sagely Monastery, and will graduate next June.
Qin Yi Shi is quiet by nature. Ever since she was little, she has disliked movies, parties, and entertainment. She often pondered the question: Where will I go after I die? The Buddhist Sutras taught her the secrets of life. As a small child, she was drawn to the temple and monastic life. In high school, she felt that everything in the world was illusory and that the only true path was to leave home. She wants to liberate not only herself, but all sentient beings, from birth and death.
