Qin Zhi Shi is from Shuangcheng County in Jilin Province, Manchuria. She is the Venerable Master's sister-in-law. A traditional Chinese wife, she helped her husband and raised her children without ever hitting them. Being illiterate, she is always frank and never argues with others. She is perpetually content and cherishes what she has. The most surprising thing is that she has never spent a cent in her life.
When the Venerable Master was living in a hut by his mother's grave, Qin Zhi Shi frequently walked over a mile to deliver food to him. After delivering it, she would immediately depart, knowing that the Master did not talk to people. Within a radius of thirty miles, many people had heard of the Filial Son Bai and were moved to deliver food to him.
Qin Zhi Shi first came into contact with the Buddhadharma when she moved to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in 1992. Over the years, she has regularly recited the Buddha's name and bowed to the Buddhas with great diligence. On April 3 this year, she suddenly experienced a deep pain in her abdomen. After being hospitalized, her condition worsened. She developed abdominal dropsy and had difficulty breathing. Twice her hospital room was filled with flies buzzing back and forth. Back in mainland China she had killed many flies. She recited "Om mani padme hum" and transferred merit to the flies.
The doctors diagnosed that she needed a gall bladder operation. Qin Zhi Shi recited "Homage to Amitabha Buddha" and "Homage to the Greatly Kind and Compassionate Bodhisattva Who Observes the World's Sounds." On April 15, she woke up from a dream and said, "Indescribable! Indescribable!" Then she said, "In the air there are boundless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I see them very clearly. And there is a loud sound in my ear saying, 'Indescribable, indescribable.' If I recover, I will definitely leave home."
She was unable to eat for one and a half months, and seven tubes were connected to her body. She was wavering on the brink of death. After the operation she recovered rapidly. On May 27, she set everything aside and left the home-life, single-mindedly reciting the Buddha's name and seeking rebirth in the Pure Land.
