“The animals you eat are not those who devour others,
they are gentle creatures
harm no one, yet devoured by you as reward of their
gentleness”
Jean Jacques Rousseau
on this harvest day
instead of swallowing turkeys
I swallow rage
my animal soul screams among the
three hundred forty million turkeys
factory farmed or free ranged
foot bound, wings torn, beaks slayed
before their pleading cries are silenced by the blades
they were the chosen ones
creatures tormented by birth, destined
to be dissolved into the belly of man
proud and curious
afraid of pain and death
roaming free on earth
a drink of water, a safe place to nest
turkey or apeman
in will, in desire, in destiny
mirroring each other
are we not the same?
predator of all
master of alchemy
inside the dark chamber
sentient beings grown like crops to be harvested
our winged sisters and feathered brothers
whose mission on earth was long before yours
who knew the same sky, the same earth
and the same harvest joy
laughed and played in innocence
journeyed for millions of years
whose destiny still is blessed by our ailing mother
on these harvest days, season in abundance
what gratitude have you to offer to our earth siblings
must you, her youngest species
turn your head away
from her pleading eyes
animals and plants engineered
their genes are spliced
driven by your own madness
descendant of the apes
you have become your own mutation
created in the laboratory
of your own making
superior in metamorphosis
only the microbes
are allowed by your generosity
to evolve, to feed and feast
on your flesh and soul
for they are your equal
predator of all
Gaia is mourning
her heart is broken
burning in the ocean of blood
is the vessel that carries us all
Note: Gaia is the Greek name for the Goddess of the Earth.
In ecology, it refers to the integration of all living sytems.
