足下三千里，風塵赴南華。一九四八年，宣公上人（度輪法師）趕至南華寺，叩見虛雲老和尚。時下虛老已一○九歲。佛祖心燈，從釋迦牟尼而下，虛老則為四四祖。他一見度輪法師，立與印證，並授諸佛心印。因此，度輪法師嗣四五代祖法脈，於東土則是禪宗十九祖；溈仰宗第九祖。宣公對此而作一偈：
雲公見我言如是，
我見雲公證如是；
雲公與我悉如是，
普願眾生亦如是。
兩位老和尚在上，端帥人天師表。命中注定，今生無緣得見。聊作一偈，以表追思：
三世時中恆如是，
唯是如如唯如是；
逸處真如恆如是，
禮足合一我如是。 |

In 1948, after 3,000 miles of travel, Master Hsuan Hua arrived at Nanhua Monastery and bowed before the Venerable Master Hsu Yun, who was then 109 years old. The Elder Master Yun, the 44th Patriarch from Shakyamuni Buddha, immediately recognized and certified Master Hua’s spiritual accomplishments and transmitted to him the wonderful mind-to-mind seal of all Buddhas. Thus, the Master became the 45th Patriarch from Shakyamuni Buddha, the 19th Patriarch in China from the Venerable Bodhidharma, and the 9th Patriarch of the Wei Yang Sect. This is how Master Hua described the occasion:
The Noble Yun saw me and said, “Thus it is”.
I saw the Noble Yun and verified, “Thus it is”.
The Noble Yun and I both Thus,
Universally vow that all beings will also be Thus.
This is my response to both of you, Masters of Masters, whom as fate would have it, I was not able to meet in this life:
Thus it was, thus it is, thus it shall be
Thus-thus it can only be and be only thus
In true thusness you repose, forever thus
Humbly at your feet I’m one with thusness. |
