你若不用功、不修行,好像磨刀之
石,不見其損,日有所虧。
不要參一天、兩天,就生出一種厭倦的心了,說:「這得什麼時候能開悟呢?」
什麼時候?沒有時候開悟。說:「那麼參它幹什麼呢?」這個沒有時候就是不知道什麼時候,你沒有一定的時候開悟,就是看你用功用得怎麼樣。你用功,朝於斯、
夕於斯來用功,功夫成就了,自然就會開悟。你功夫沒用成就的時候,你想開悟,就像今天所講的那個幫助苗長的人一個樣。你看這個樹木,它不是一天長大的,它
一天長一點、一天長一點,你不看見它怎麼樣往高了長,但是一天比一天高。所以說:「參禪如春原之草」,好像春天在外邊原野那個草似的,那個樹木似的,「不
見其長」,你看不見它這一個時候長多少,但是「日有所增」,一天比一天它就高了。
你這個參禪就是用功,你若不用功、不修行,好像什麼呢?好像「磨刀之石」,磨刀那個石頭,「不見其損」,不見
它虧損,「日有所虧」,一天比一天就少一點,一天比一天少一點,但是你可看不見哪一天少多少;你不修行就是這樣子。虧損什麼呢?虧損你本有的智慧。
那麼樹木是這樣子,我們修道也是這樣子,你不要想很快就成了佛了。不錯!成佛是很快的,彈指之間,但是你功夫
要用到了,彈指之間就開悟了,就成佛了;你若不用功,就不會開悟的,不會成佛的。好像你讀書,先讀小學,然後讀中學,再讀大學,然後再讀master(碩
士)、博士,這麼要十多年的功夫,才能得到一個學位。何況你要參禪成佛呢!不是就這麼容易就成就了。
說:「這我可真後悔了,我若知道這麼難,我不參加這個禪七囉!」現在後悔已經遲了,你已經參加了。那麼參加了
就不要後悔,就要有始有終,看看怎麼樣子,打一個禪七試試。我告訴你們,不會白打的,打一次禪七,你那個菩提苗就會長得很高了;打兩個禪七,你那個菩提苗
長得更高了,長得高來高去,就會結菩提果了。所以你不要後悔,絕對你不會吃虧的,所謂「功不唐捐」。你有一天在這兒用功,你的法身慧命就增長了很多。不要
說你在這兒打一個禮拜的禪七,就到這兒看一看,都種菩提因,遠種菩提因,種善根。所以呢,還要努力用功,不要後悔。

If you don’t
work hard, then your cultivation is like a whetstone—
although one cannot see it getting worn down, it diminishes day by day.
When we
cultivate the Way, we cultivate today, cultivate tomorrow, and still
keep on cultivating the day after. When we investigate Chan, we also
investigate today, investigate tomorrow, and investigate the next
day—every day we investigate Chan. Don’t investigate one day or two
days and then get tired of it, saying, “When will I ever get
enlightened?”
When? There’s no
certain time when you’ll get enlightened.
You say, “Then
what in the world am I investigating Chan for?”
"No certain
time” means it’s not known when. There is no fixed time when you will
get enlightened. It depends on how hard you work. If you work hard day
and night, then when your skill is perfected you will naturally become
enlightened. If you hope to become enlightened before your skill is
perfected, then you are like the foolish person I described today who
tried to help his sprouts grow.
Look at a tree.
It doesn’t become tall in a day. Every day it grows a little bit. You
can’t perceive how it gets tall, but day by day it grows taller. That’s
why it’s said, “Investigating Chan is like grass growing in the
springtime.” It’s like a wilderness area in the spring. It’s like a
meadow of grass and trees. “You don’t see it grow.” You can’t see how
much it grows each day, but “Every day it grows more.” Day by day it
gets bigger.
Investigating
Chan is applying effort to develop skill. If you don’t apply effort, if
you don’t cultivate, what’s it like? It’s like a whetstone. “Although
one cannot detect it being worn down, it decreases in size day by day.”
Day by day the whetstone gets smaller, but you can’t perceive how much
littler it gets each day.
Not cultivating
the Way is also like that. Don’t think that you can become a Buddha
very quickly. Right, becoming a Buddha is fast. It happens in a
fingersnap. But that’s if you have applied all the effort needed. Then,
in an instant, you become a Buddha. But if you don’t apply effort you
will not become enlightened—you cannot become a Buddha. It’s like an
education. First you study in elementary school, then you study in
secondary school, then you study at a university. After you get a
degree, you go on for a Master’s and then a Doctorate. It takes more
than ten years of hard work to get an education. How much the more does
this principle apply to investigating Chan and becoming a Buddha! It’s
not something that can be done easily.
You say: “I
really regret this. If I had known it was this difficult, I wouldn’t
have joined this session.”
Your regret
comes too late; you are already a participant. Since you are
participating, don’t have regrets; finish what you have started. Sit
through the Chan session at least for the experience of it. I’ll tell
you: you won’t participate in vain! Participating in one Chan session
causes your Bodhi sprouts grow a lot taller. Sitting in two Chan
sessions causes your Bodhi sprouts to grow even bigger. They keep
growing and growing until they bear the fruit of Bodhi. And so don’t
have regrets. You definitely won’t take a loss. As it’s said, “The work
will not be done in vain.” For every day you are here applying effort,
the wisdom-life of your Dharma body increases tremendously. We don’t
even have to talk about participating in a full week of Chan—just
coming to take a look plants causes for Bodhi. Planting causes for
Bodhi, you plant good roots. Apply effort with diligence and don’t have
any regrets.
