BODHI FIELD

LOWERING MY HEAD, I AM WILLING TO BE A PERSON BELOW ALL PEOPLE
I walk beneath the feet of all living beings

By Zhao Shan

In modern society, as a result of the wide availability of knowledge and the information explosion, group after group of super-achievers are created. Men and women all recognize clearly that "knowledge is power." Therefore, modern super-achievers compete with each other in the pursuit of excellence, continuing to expand their territory within the scope of knowledge and skills. In their respective professions, they not only want to surpass themselves, they strive to surpass others even more.

This attitude of seeking excellence not only prevails in research centers, laboratories, and offices, it also appears on dinner tables and in living rooms, making its way into many households. While there is competition among co-workers, rivalry also exists in couples and among siblings. Modern super-achievers are placed under endless pressure, and their desire to be a "person above all people" never stops for a moment.

The path of cultivation that learners of Buddhism walk is absolutely the opposite. Instead of wanting to become the worldly “person above all people," they are willing to be the “person below all people." A perfect example of this is the Venerable Master, who compares himself to a small ant and a tiny mosquito, "walking beneath the feet of all living beings." It is also like the Great Master Yinguang, who said, “Regard everyone else as a Bodhisattva and oneself as the only ordinary person." This is exactly the kind of "humble mind” that a cultivator of the Way should learn to have. Only by taking constant delight in helping others can one attain the state of “great kindness for those with whom one has no affinities, and great compassion for those with whom one shares the same substance." That many patriarchs and greatly virtuous ones came from the vegetable garden and the kitchen is the proof of this statement. However, to help others does not mean to give up working hard ourselves, so lazy people should not use this as an excuse.
