本經以「孝道、度生、拔苦、報恩」為宗旨。地藏菩薩生生世世都很孝順父母，所以《地藏經》就是佛教的一部「孝經」。
地藏菩薩誓願宏深，隨類現身，度脫一切有情；他常居在幽冥，救拔地獄極苦的眾生。「地獄不空，誓不成佛；眾生度盡，方證菩提。」地藏菩薩這種廣大的誓願，是最慈悲、最孝順的思想和行為。所以經過不可說這麼多的劫，地藏菩薩還是做菩薩，沒有成佛。
本經提到地藏菩薩的過去因緣、功德利益、應機示化。也告訴我們眾生欲求福慧於地藏菩薩，沒有不現世求得的，不必等到沒世之後。菩薩畏因，眾生畏果。救「果」固要，救「因」更急。
This Sutra is based upon the principles of filial piety, saving living beings, eradicating sufferings, and repaying kindness. Earth Treasury Bodhisattva has been very filial to his parents in life after life. Therefore, the Earth Treasury Sutra is a sutra of filiality in Buddhism.
Earth Treasury Bodhisattva's vows are vast and deep. He manifests himself in different forms according to the different kinds of beings, thus saving all sentient beings. He dwells constantly in the underworld to save the beings undergoing extreme suffering in the hells. "I vow not to accomplish Buddhahood before the hells are emptied; I will only realize Bodhi when all living beings have been saved." This great, vast vow of Earth Treasury Bodhisattva expresses his most kind, compassionate, and filial thought and conduct. Therefore, ineffable eons have passed and Earth Treasury Bodhisattva is still a Bodhisattva. He has not become a Buddha.
This Sutra mentions the past causes and conditions, merit and virtue, and benefits of the Bodhisattva, as well as his teaching of living beings in accordance of their potentials. This Sutra also tells us that if living beings seek blessings and wisdom from this Bodhisattva, their requests will always be granted in their present life. They need not wait till future lives. While Bodhisattvas fear causes, living beings fear effects and retributions. It is necessary to save ourselves from "effects," but the urgency of saving ourselves from "causes" is even greater.
