美國法界佛敎總會訪問團於一九七八年赴馬來西亞訪問時，劉黃紐玉居士便皈依了上人。從一九八八年她開始每天念誦《地藏經》，希望消除自己的業障。然而在一九九一年春，當她確定自己罹患了子宮癌的時候，劉老居士決定面對現實，堅強地接受治療。剛手術之後，發覺自己記憶力很明顯地退化，加上腹部的肌肉也下墜了，感覺全身都不對勁時，她整個情緒陷入低潮沮喪中，但她仍然不改每天持誦《地藏經》的功課。
開刀後的第二個星期，劉老居士夢到有位護法善神把她拉起來，而師父上人在前面對她微笑，並且輕輕地拍她的手臂，似乎表示一切都會好轉，接著看見一位銀髯飄飄很像是虛雲老和尚的出家人。由於這個夢，使得劉老居士決定好好把身體照顧好，以有限的生命來勤學佛法。
萬佛聖城一九九二年舉行水陸空大法會，劉老居士將平日服用的藥整理好，在兩個女兒陪伴下到了聖城。法會期間，每天將近二十小時的活動，她不但全程參加，而且不需要吃藥。在法會最後一天的「送聖」時，劉老居士清楚地感覺到有水先灑在她的右肩上，然後再灑在左肩上，起初以為是下雨，但仔細往天空一瞧，也沒有下雨，更沒有人在灑水，於是猜想「一定是聖水灑在我身上」。說也奇妙，這水灑在肩上後，多年來僵硬的頸背，頓時感到輕鬆又自在。兩個女兒自此以後也發心吃素學佛。更可貴的是，原本只重生意不信佛法的劉老先生，看到由美國回來的老伴，精神煥發，藥箱也原封不動地帶回來，不由得開始對佛教採取正面的態度。
劉老居士今年已七十一歲，對自己一手拉拔長大的七女一子，已不再操心，她只盼望累積修行的資糧，在人生的最後能夠沒有任何牽掛安詳地往生極樂淨土。總結多年來學佛的心得，劉老居士頗有領悟地說，佛陀如此地偉大，心胸如此開闊，你騙得了人，但不能騙佛，因為每一件事都源自於我們的自心。

When the Delegation of Dharma Realm Buddhist Association visited Malaysia in 1978, Upasika New-geok Wong Liu took refuge with the Venerable Master Hua. In 1988, she started to recite the Earth Store Sutra everyday in order to eradicate her karmic obstructions. In the Spring of 1991, when she was certain that she had cancer of the uterus, Elder Upasika Liu decided to face the reality and undergo medical treatment. After the operation, she discovered that her memory had undergone an obvious degeneration and her abdominal muscle was now sagging, making her feel uncomfortable all over. Her emotions were at a low ebb of depression, yet she continued to recite the
Earth Store Sutra.
Two weeks after the operation, Elder Upasika Liu dreamed that Dharma-Protecting Spirit came to pull her up. In front of her was the Venerable Master, smiling at her and patting her arm, as if to say that everything would turn for the better. Then she saw a left-home person with a wispy gray beard, who looked like the Elder Ven. Master Syu Yun. Because of this dream, she was determined to take good care of her body and diligently learn Buddhadharma in this limited life.
In 1992, when the Sagely City of Ten Thousand Buddhas held the Water, Land and Air Dharma Assembly, Elder Upasika Liu packed her medicine and came to the City accompanied by her two daughters. During the Dharma Assembly, the activities lasted nearly twenty hours everyday. She not only took part in the entire event, but also did not need to take any medicine. During the "Sending off the Sages" on the last day of the event, she clearly felt water being sprinkled first on her right shoulder, and then on her left shoulder. At first she thought it was rain, but after taking a good look at the sky, she saw there was no rain and no one was sprinkling water. She concluded, "This must be holy water being sprinkled on me." Strangely enough, her neck which had been stiff for many years suddenly became relaxed. Her two daughters consequently made a resolve to eat vegetarian food and study Buddhism. Seeing his wife return from the United States in radiant health, with the medicine box unopened, Mr. Liu, who used to only care about business and had no faith in Buddhism, now developed a favorable attitude towards Buddhism.
At age of seventy one, Elder Upasika Liu does no longer worries about the seven daughters and one son she has raised, but only wishes to accumulate merit and virtue in cultivation so that she can peacefully be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. After many years of studying Buddhism, Elder Upasika Liu reflects on the greatness of the Buddha and the vastness of his mind. She remarks, "You may deceive other people, but you cannot deceive the Buddha, because everything comes from our mind."
