Li Sheng lived in the late Ching Dynasty and was from Je-jyang. He sold dates for a living. Fond of sensual pleasures, he seduced women. His motives were vile and everyone abhorred him. Once, while selling dates in a neighboring village, he enticed a married woman with honeyed words to return with him. When he reached home and could not find his wife, he realized that she had eloped with another man. As is cause, so is the effect; the retribution is never off. It is said, "When you see alluring forms and desire them, the retribution will fall on your wife and daughter." True indeed, true indeed!
An ancient poem says, "Sir, I exhort you not to be encumbered by illicit affairs. When you borrow in haste, you have to pay back promptly. In your family, someone will settle the account for you. You might want to deny this debt, but she will not."
At this point, the young woman's former husband came searching for her. Failing to find her, he sought advice from the gods. The instructions said, "Men and women are captivated by their conjugal fantasy. Do you remember that Lwo Fu still has a husband? Today, when the two of you run into each other, you can merely laugh. Clearly, this is a replay of the past."The man remained silent and left. So, this woman was already married when she made off with her second mate. Such people serve as an example to warn those in the world. If you commit adultery with another man's wife, the same fate will befall your own wife. Through the countless ages, the cycle of retribution has remained a fixed law.
A Sutra says, "Regard the elderly as your mother, the middle-aged as your sisters, and the young as your daughers. If you can contemplate them this way, you will be free of indiscretion."
A verse of criticism says:
Causes upon causes and effects upon effects
Are difficult to evade and escape from.
Foolish people unwittingly
Light a flame atop the oil
Thus burning up all their good roots.
Plotting for advantage they foil their own scheme.
Even when dying, they still do not realize
When massive offenses they have created.
Another verse says:
Businessmen without virtue lust for women and wealth,
Unwilling to change even if they do themselves in.
They eagerly dig their own graves
By wallowing in their passions.
Prostitution results from being overly lustful
Flower pluckers diminish their own lifespans.
The wild butterflies that seduce others line up before the hells
Mortals of the world are muddled and unclear about their true nature
Becoming deluded and creating offenses unlatches the door to vice.
