【本刊訊】十一月八日，下午三點到五點，宣公上人受美國洛杉磯加州州立大學佛學社之邀，於該校生物大樓，對兩百多位在場中、美人士演說。講題是「今日佛教、倫理道德和教育」。
一開始，宣公上人的五位出家弟子－恆緣、恆優、恆哲、恆實、恆修依序發表意見。他們認為個人的生命價值，是建立在尊重一切的生命之上，要化私為公，持守淨戒，貢獻自己來利益眾生。並且唯有看重倫理道德，才能挽救今日科技進步，而教育失敗，所造成的種種世界危機。
宣公上人更深入提出根本的問題－教育破產，因為現代人不但失了佛性，連人性也失了，只有畜生性，只知做畜生事，把原本尊貴的人性弄得卑賤了，這是很可悲的。最後由大眾發問，上人一一回答。

[Local News] On November 8, at the invitation of Buddhism Study Group and the Buddhist Association of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the Venerable Master lectured on "Buddhism, Ethics, and Education in Today's World" from 3-5 p.m. to over two hundred Asian and American Buddhists.
Five of the Venerable Master's left-home disciples-Heng Ywan, Heng You, Heng Je, Heng Sure, Heng Syou-started off the lecture by taking turns to express their own views. They feel that since the value of human life is based upon respect for all life, we need to transform selfishness into public-mindedness, uphold the pure precepts, and dedicate our talents to benefitting living beings. Furthermore, only by valuing ethics and virtue can we save the world from all the crises engendered by the advance of technology and the failure of education.
The Venerable Master further pointed out that the fundamental problem of the bankruptcy of education exists because today's people have forgotten not only their Buddha-nature, but their human nature as well. Emphasizing only their animal nature, they act like animals, having degraded their basic human nature. This is very pitiful. At the end, the Venerable Master answered questions from the audience.
