衢州里胥至貧民家督賦。民祇有一哺雞。擬烹之。胥恍忽見桑林間。有黃衣女子乞命。里胥驚惻。少間。見民持刀取哺雞。意疑之。止勿殺。後再至。見雞率群雛。向前踴躍。有似相感之狀。胥行百步遇虎。忽見雞飛撲虎眼。胥因奔免。
【白話註解】
浙江衢州地方官里胥，有一次到鄉下貧民家，察視賦稅，民家只有一隻孵卵母雞，打算烹宰招待里胥。里胥恍惚看見桑樹林間，有黃衣女子，乞求饒命，里胥驚異憐憫。一會兒，見貧民持刀捉母雞，心中驚疑，急忙阻止貧民不要宰殺，救了母雞一命。後來，里胥再來時，見母雞率一群小雞，向前踴躍歡舞，好像表示感恩的情狀。里胥辦妥事情回去時，行走百步，途遇老虎出來，正在驚慌恐懼時，忽見母雞飛來猛撲虎眼，里胥因而逃脫，免遭虎難。

Text:
In the District of Chyu, there was an official named Li Syu. One day he called on a poor family to assess their taxes. The family had only a hen, which was brooding its eggs. The family planned to kill the hen.
In a dream-like state, Li Syu saw a woman clothed in yellow at the mulberry grove begging for her life. He was startled, and pitied her. Soon afterwards he saw someone holding a knife preparing to kill the chicken. Doubts arose in his mind, and he told the man not to kill it. Later, when he returned, he saw the hen and her brood of chicks jumping up and down and running towards him, as if to show their gratitude.
Li Syu walked about a hundred steps and met up with a tiger. Suddenly the hen appeared, flying and flapping its wings at the tiger's eyes. Because of the hen, Li Syu was able to escape the tiger.
Commentary:
In the District of Chyu in Je Jyang, there was alocal official named Li Syu. One time he called on a poor family in a rural area to assess their taxes. The family had only a hen, which was waiting for its eggs to hatch. The family planned to kill the hen to welcome Li Syu.
While in a dream-like state, Li Syu saw a woman in yellow clothing emerging from a mulberry grove and pleading for her life. Li Syu was shocked, and he felt sorry for her. Moments later, he saw a member of the poor family holding a knife and grabbing the chicken. Li Syu was stunned and immediately prevented the man with the knife from slaying the hen.
Later Li Syu returned and saw a hen leading her brood of chicks. All of them were hopping up and down, frolicking happily as if to show their gratitude.
When Li Syu completed his errand, he headed back. After going about a hundred steps, he encountered a tiger. Just when he was most terrified, the hen suddenly flew at the tiger's eyes and attacked them. As a result, Li Syu escaped the terror of being attacked by a tiger.
