佛經上常講到大地震動；地震是怎樣來的呢？地震也可說是人震，因人與地震相通著；人震地亦震，人不震，地亦不震。佛入涅槃時地爲什麼有六種震動？因爲人心恐慌，怕得不得了，七情六欲都跑出來，這就是地震。所以你喜歡了是地震；你發脾氣，不高興了也是地震；你悲哀、恐懼是地震；你生愛心也是地震；你生討厭心還是地震；你生欲念，那更是大地震。因爲心裡的七情六欲動盪，所以地就震動。
爲什麼世界有地震？就因爲每個人天天在製造地震，只是自己不曉得，尤其情情愛愛更是大地震。每一個人都不平安了，這就是大地震。「山林、樹下、河海」即是我們本身：頭髮即山林；眼睛、眉毛、鬍子即樹木；河海即是我們的欲念，欲念控制不住，故有大地震。
佛要入涅槃時，人都震動，平時不哭的也哭了。有形的地震動了，無形的地也震動了。裡面震外面才震；裡面動外面也動；裡面有什麼外面亦有什麼。裡外是息息相關，有連帶關係的。
我們人天天情情愛愛，所以天天在製造地震。這是很危險的事情，是生死的關頭，但人人還是製造地震而不知警惕，要等有形的地震來了才知怕。在無形的階段，當他製造地震時，他不怕。旣然種地震因，就會結地震果；人在種因時不怕，結果時卻嚇死了。今天這些話你們沒有人相信吧！

Buddhist sutras often mention earthquakes.
Why do earthquakes happen? The earth quakes when people
quake, since people and earth are connected. When people
tremble, the earth also trembles. If people don't tremble,
the earth will not tremble either. Why did the earth shake
in six different ways when the Buddha entered nirvana? Out
of panic people's seven emotions and six desires gush forth.
That is an earthquake. An earthquake happens when you are
happy; an earthquake happens when you are unhappy or upset.
An earthquake occurs when you are melancholy or afraid. An
earthquake ensues when you are in love; an earthquake also
ensues when you are annoyed. A major earthquake definitely
takes place when your sexual urge arises. The earth quakes
when your seven kinds of emotions and six types of desires
quiver in your mind.
Why do earthquakes transpire in the
world? Everyone generates earthquakes on a daily basis;
people just don't realize that they're manufacturing seismic
activities daily. Romantic sentiments and love especially
churn out major earthquakes. When no one is in a state of
peace, a major earthquake occurs. "Forests, trees and
oceans" refer to parts of us. The hairs on our heads
symbolize forests of an ecosystem; the eyes, brows and
beards represent trees, while oceans represent our desires.
When we cannot control our thoughts and desires, major
earthquakes happen.
When the Buddha was about to enter
nirvana, people shook hysterically. Those who usually didn't
cry wept. When the material world shivers, the imperceptible
world also shivers. When interior space shakes, the exterior
follows suit. When what's inside moves, what's outside does
the same. Whatever is within is also without. The internal
and the external are interdependent and interconnected. We
who dwell in romance and love daily are creating earthquakes
daily. This is a dangerous situation. Even though people are
at a critical juncture of birth and death, they are busy
producing earthquakes rather than being careful. We are
frightened only when our ground trembles noticeably. People
are not afraid of seismic activities when they are still
indiscernible. Since people have planted the causes for
earthquakes, however, they naturally bear the fruits of
earthquakes. People do not fear the causes they have
planted, but are scared to death of the fruits they now
reap.
