Early l960’s: Early Years in America

上人讓弟子們看一份證書，上面寫著「正法眼藏　佛祖源流」，這是溈仰宗傳承的表信。一九五六年五月，上虛下雲老和尚將表信寄給當時住在香港的上人，同時附上的一封信裡寫著：「座下為法心切，續佛祖慧命，當滿座下之願，附寄源流俾承祖脈，祖道賴以重興，是所至望，專覆不盡　即頌。」證書上寫著：

The Master is showing San Francisco disciples the document titled “Treasury of the Orthodox Dharma Eye: The Source of Buddhas and Patriarchs,” a transmission certificate of the Wei-yang lineage. The Venerable Master Hsu Yun sent this certificate to the Master (who was residing in Hong Kong) in May of l956. Elder Master Yun’s letter, which accompanied the document says, “You, Venerable One, have concern for the preservation of the Dharma and for the continuation of the wisdom-life of the Buddhas and Patriarchs. I am sending you the Source, the inheritance of the Patriarchs’ pulse, the Patriarchs’ Way. Entrusted to you, it will prosper. This is my hope.” The document bears this certification:

「傳溈仰正宗第八代，德清虛雲老人，今將正法眼藏，囑咐：第九代宣化度輪禪人善自護持。」

Transmitter of the Wei-yang Orthodox Lineage, the Elder Te-ch’ing Hsu-yun now bequeaths the Treasury of the Orthodox Dharma Eye upon the ninth generation, Dhyana cultivator Hsuan-hua To-lun, to be personally protected and maintained by him.

This photo also shows the incense-burn offering on the Master’s chest in the shape of the character 卍 meaning “myriad,” which is used in Buddhism to represent the Buddhas’ myriad virtues.
